RIBBED SOCKS

MATERIALS 2 skeins of sock yarn Set of 5 #2 (2.75 mm) double point needles Recommended Yarns: Dyed Jems Sock Yarn
SIZES Ladies (Mens) Note: Needles #1 can be used with the Men pattern for Ladies
CUFF & LEG CO 56 (64) sts Work k3, p1 rib for 69 rows. (65 rows total including CO row - approx 6 1/2 inches)
(please note if you would prefer a classic heel go to the broken rib sock pattern)
Next Row: Needle 1 - K across increasing 1 stitch in middle of sts, Needles 2 & 3 - Work in Pattern, Needle 4 K across increasing 1 stitch in middle of sts Next 4 Rows: Needle 1 - K , Needles 2 & 3 - Work in Pattern, Needle 4 K
SHORT ROW HEEL Row 1: Knit Needle 1 sts onto Needle 4 until you have 1 st left on Needle 1, turn Row 2: Yo backwards, p27 (31) (1 st un-worked), turn Row 3: Yo, knit to paired sts made by yo of previous row (the yo will form a loop out of the side of the adjacent st), leaving 3 sts on left needle (i.e., do not work the pair), turn. Row 4: Yo backwards, purl to paired sts made by the yo of the previous row, turn. Rep the last 2 rows until there are 11 total sts between YOs [11 unpaired sts between YOs], ending with a WS row. Turn so RS is facing. Second Half of Short Row Heel Row 1: (RS) Yo as usual, knit to the paired st made by yo of previous row, k1, (the first st of the pair), correct the mount of the yo (so that the leading edge is on the front of the needle), k2tog (the yo with the first st of the next pair, leaving a yo as the first st on the left needle), turn. Row 2: (WS) Yo backwards, purl to paired st made by yo of previous row, purl the first st of the pair, ssp (the yo with the first st of the next pair, leaving a yo as the first st on the left needle; see Stitch Guide), turn. Row 3: Yo, knit to the paired st made by yo of previous row, knit the first st of the pair (the next 2 loops will be YOs), correct the mount of each of these YOs, k3tog (2 YOs with the first st of the next pair), turn. Row 4: Yo backwards, purl to next yo (the next 2 loops are YOs), sssp (2 YOs with the first st of the next pair; see Stitch Guide), turn. Row 5: Yo, knit to next yo (the next 2 loops will be YOs), correct the mount of each of these YOs, k3tog (2 YOs with the first st of the next pair), turn. Rep the last 2 rows until all YOs of heel have been consumed, ending with Row 4. The last turn will bring RS facing—30 sts + 1 yo. Knit half of sts onto new needle (Needle 1) and then Knit to last stitch with another needle. Slip the Slip st onto Needle 2 (Sts are now divided again onto 2 needles.
FOOT Row 1: Needle 2 Either P2Tog or K2tog depending on if the 2nd st on Needle 2 is a Knit or Purl st, Continue in pattern across needle 2 and needle 3 until you have 1 st left on needle 3. Knit or Purl this st together with the slip st on needle 4. Needle 4 Knit
Row 2: Knit stitches on Needle 1, Knit in pattern on Needles 3 & 4, Knit stitches on Needle 4 Repeat row 2 until sock measures 2 inches less than the length of your foot
ROUNDED TOE For Rows 1,2,3,5,6,8,9,11,13,15 knit all sts For Rows 4, 7, 10, 12, 14, 16 Needle 1: knit until 3 stitch es before end, k2tog, k1. Needle 2: k1, ssk, knit to end of needle. Needle 3: Repeat Needle 1. Needle 4: Repeat Needle 2. After Row 16 Continue the decreasing row until there are 18 sts left. Knit stitches from needle 1 onto needle 4. Slip sts from needle 2 onto needle 3. Graft remaining sts together.
GRAFTING Holding the 2 needles parallel with wrong sides of fabric together, thread a blunt tapestry needle with yarn end and work as follows: Insert needle as if to purl into the first stitch on front piece. Insert needle as if to knit into the first stitch on the back piece. Then follow steps 1-4 as outlined below. 1) Insert it as if to knit through the first st on the front needle and let the st drop from the needle. 2) Insert the needle into the second st on the front needle as if to purl and pull the yarn through, leaving the st on the needle. 3) Insert the needle into the first st on the back needle as if to purl and let it drop from the needle, then 4) insert it as if to knit through the second st on the back needle and pull the yarn through, leaving the st on the needle. Repeat 1-4 until all sts are gone. When finished, adjust tension as necessary. Weave in ends.
